Delaware's members of Congress on Thursday announced their nominations for admission to the nation's service academies' classes of 2018.

"This is one of the primary ways we can help shape America's future," said Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., in a news release. "I am confident that many future leaders of our country will emerge from this distinguished group ... they are among Delaware's finest."

"Nominating these gifted young men and women to the U.S. Service Academies is a sincere honor and a responsibility that I take very seriously," said Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del. "The next few years will be challenging - academically, mentally and physically - but I am confident in their ability to rise to the challenge and to come through this experience well-equipped to join the ranks of America's finest military officers."

"It's a tremendous privilege to nominate these wonderful young Delawareans to attend our nation's service academies," said Rep. John Carney, D-Del.  "These nominations are the culmination of years of hard work and effort both in school and out of school.  I hope each person nominated, as well as their families, friends, and communities are very proud of their accomplishments."

In order to be granted admission, an applicant must meet all eligibility requirements and receive a nomination from a member of the House or Senate, the vice president, or the secretary of the Air Force, Army, or Navy.  The decision whether or not to appoint a nominee rests solely with each academy.
